About Antonio

Dr. Antonio Carlos Buzaid is one of the most distinguished medical oncologists in Latin America and a globally recognized clinical researcher, lending exceptional authority to PHP Biotech’s Advisory Board. He has more than 30 years of clinical oncology experience and an extensive peer-reviewed publication record.

Dr. Buzaid graduated from the University of São Paulo Faculty of Medicine (FMUSP) in 1982, where he was recognized as a top student in the basic sciences (Rockefeller Foundation award). He completed a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Arizona, where he received the Eleanor B. Connell award for best fellow. In the United States, soon after his fellowship, he became an Assistant Professor at Yale University and Director of the Melanoma Unit and co-Director of the Lung Cancer Unit. After four years at Yale, Dr. Buzaid became an Associate Professor and Medical Director of the Melanoma and Skin Center at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Returning to Brazil in 1998, he co-founded the oncology center at Hospital Sírio-Libanês, which he led for over a decade. He then created the Oncology Center at Beneficência Portuguesa de São Paulo, where he served as General Medical Director for 15 years. He is currently the General Medical Director of the Oncology Center of the Hospital Nove de Julho e Samaritano Higienópolis.

His scholarly footprint is substantial. His ResearchGate profile lists more than 200 publications with over 15,000 citations, and he has authored hundreds of book chapters. He created the Brazilian Manual of Clinical Oncology, where he has served as co-editor since 2002 — a reference text now in its 10th edition, translated into Spanish and English, with more than 45,000 copies sold. He is a co-founder of the public-education project Vencer o Câncer. He is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Brazilian Society of Clinical Oncology (SBOC), which honored him with the Ronaldo Ribeiro Career Award in Clinical Oncology in 2021.

For PHP Biotech, Dr. Buzaid’s guidance is invaluable: his deep expertise in melanoma and breast cancer directly informs the clinical translation strategy for PHP53-nb in triple-negative breast cancer and other aggressive tumors.
